Mouth & Lip Rejuvenation in Singapore
The area around the mouth is one of the most dynamic parts of the face. It moves constantly when we speak, smile, chew, and express emotion.
Because of this constant mechanical stress, ageing around the mouth rarely involves just one issue. It typically involves several different changes occurring at the same time — volume loss, hyperactive muscle movement, degraded skin quality, loss of deep support, and shifting facial structure.
This is why I prefer to assess the entire lower face rather than simply trying to fill one specific mouth wrinkle in isolation.
What Is the Perioral Area?
In medicine, we use the term perioral to describe the entire interconnected area surrounding the mouth. When I assess a patient for mouth rejuvenation, I am looking at this entire aesthetic zone, which includes the:
Lip border (vermilion border)
Corners of the mouth (oral commissures)
Skin above the upper lip (where “smoker’s lines” form)
Marionette region (running from the mouth corners down to the chin)
Chin-lip transition (mental crease)
Common Mouth & Lip Concerns in Lip Rejuvenation Singapore
Patients seeking rejuvenation usually notice a combination of the following:
Reduced lip definition or a flattened cupid’s bow
Fine vertical lip lines (often called “smoker’s lines” or “lipstick lines”)
Downturned mouth corners (giving a resting sad or angry expression)
Marionette lines (folds framing the lower mouth)
Loss of structural support around the mouth
Dry, crepey, or finely lined skin
Matching Concerns in Lip Rejuvenation Singapore
Because the mouth area is so complex, identifying the root cause of the ageing is crucial. Here is how different concerns are typically addressed:
| Patient Concern | Primary Underlying Cause | Potential Treatment Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Thinning Lips | Depletion of natural tissue volume | Lip Filler (Soft Hyaluronic Acid) |
| Smoker’s Lines / Vertical Lines | Repeated muscle movement + collagen loss | Skin Boosters, Anti-Wrinkle Injections, Laser |
| Downturned Mouth Corners | Downward muscle pull + tissue volume loss | Anti-Wrinkle Injections + Dermal Fillers |
| Marionette Lines | Mid-face tissue descent + lower face laxity | Structural Dermal Fillers, HIFU/RF Tightening |
| Poor Lip Definition | Loss of structural border support | Precise, conservative Lip Filler |
Why Does the Mouth Area Change With Age?
Volume Changes & Structural Support
As we age, the lips and surrounding soft tissues gradually lose their natural volume. Furthermore, deeper changes in our dental support, receding bone structure, and shifting facial fat pads can significantly diminish the “scaffolding” that holds up the mouth.
Repeated Movement & Skin Quality
The muscle that encircles the mouth is highly active. Years of pursing the lips contribute to expression-related vertical lines. Simultaneously, the skin around the lips becomes thinner, less elastic, and more prone to holding these creases due to cumulative collagen loss and sun exposure.
Lower-Face Ageing
The mouth does not exist in a vacuum. The descent of mid-face tissue (jowls), a receding chin position, and deepening marionette lines all change how the mouth area is perceived.
Treatment Options for Lip Rejuvenation Singapore
Lip Filler
Lip filler may be considered where the aim is to restore selected volume, definition, or proportion. The goal does not have to be visibly larger lips. In many mature patients, a highly subtle approach aimed at restoring lost hydration and definition is much more appropriate than aggressive volumisation.
For general information on dermal fillers, including their use for restoring fullness to the lips and face, see the American Academy of Dermatology.
Mouth Wrinkles & “Smoker’s Lines”
Fine vertical lines around the lips can occur even if you have never smoked. Directly injecting thick filler into these lines can sometimes create an unnatural, bulky upper lip (“monkey lip”). Instead, a combination of skin-quality treatments (like Skin Boosters to rehydrate the tissue) and precise muscle relaxation (Botulinum toxin Injections) may be much more relevant and yield a smoother, natural result.
Marionette Lines
Marionette lines run downward from the corners of the mouth toward the chin. They are heavily influenced by mid-face tissue descent, jawline laxity, and chin structure. Directly filling the marionette line is almost never the first or only option. I usually look at restoring support to the cheeks or chin to naturally lift the tissue causing the fold.
Downturned Mouth Corners
Mouth corners can appear to sag because of a lack of tissue support combined with the hyperactivity of a specific muscle (the Depressor Anguli Oris) that pulls the corners downward. Treatment often involves a targeted muscle relaxant to stop the downward pull, paired with a small amount of filler to physically prop the corner back up.
Chin Support and the Mouth Area
The chin forms the structural foundation of the lower face. A relatively retruded or under-supported chin can negatively affect the lip-to-chin relationship, making the mouth look prominent or poorly supported. This is why I always assess chin projection when a patient is mainly concerned about their mouth.
Mouth Rejuvenation Is Not Just “Lip Filler”
This is probably the most important point.
Making the lips larger does not automatically rejuvenate the mouth area.
For many patients, the greatest visible improvement comes from treating the surrounding skin quality, restoring chin support, or lifting adjacent facial tissues rather than touching the lips at all.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lip Rejuvenation Singapore
How do I get rid of smoker’s lines without surgery?
Vertical lip lines are best treated with a multi-modality approach. Botulinum toxin injections can be used in micro-doses to slightly relax the muscle that causes the pursing action. Skin boosters and PN/PDRN can then be injected to rejuvenate and hydrate the thin skin above the lip. Finally, very soft, flexible dermal fillers can sometimes be used to gently smooth out the deeper static lines without adding unwanted bulk.
Will lip filler make my lips look unnatural or ‘duck-like’?
An unnatural, protruding “duck lip” occurs when too much filler is injected, when the wrong type of stiff filler is used, or when filler migrates outside the natural lip border. My priority is always anatomical balance. By using soft, dynamic fillers and a conservative technique, we aim to restore your natural lip volume and structure, not fundamentally alter your facial proportions.
Why do the corners of my mouth turn down as I age?
Downturned mouth corners are caused by a combination of two things: the loss of supportive tissue (fat and collagen) just below the corners of the mouth, and the overactivity of a muscle that naturally pulls the corners downward when you express yourself. As the skin loses elasticity with age, this downward pull becomes permanent at rest.
