Anti-Wrinkle Treatment in Singapore
When patients ask me about anti-wrinkle treatment, the first thing I look at is how their face moves.
Lines on the forehead, between the eyebrows and around the eyes are often influenced by repeated muscle activity. But not every line is caused by movement alone.
I assess whether the concern is mainly related to muscle activity, skin ageing, volume loss or a combination of factors before deciding whether anti-wrinkle treatment is appropriate.
Why Do Expression Lines Develop?
Every time we raise our eyebrows, frown, squint or smile, specific facial muscles contract.
Over time, repeated movement can cause lines to become increasingly noticeable.
In younger skin, these lines may disappear when the face is relaxed. As collagen, elasticity and skin quality gradually change with age, some lines may begin to remain visible even when the muscles are no longer moving.
This is why I distinguish between dynamic lines and static lines during assessment.
Dynamic Lines vs Static Wrinkles
| Type of line | What it means | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Dynamic lines | Mainly appear when the facial muscles contract | Forehead lines when raising the eyebrows, frown lines when concentrating, crow’s feet when smiling |
| Static lines | Remain visible even when the face is relaxed | More established forehead creases, deeper frown lines or etched lines around the eyes |
Anti Wrinkle Treatment Singapore: How It Works
Anti-wrinkle treatment commonly involves small amounts of botulinum toxin being placed into selected facial muscles.
In Singapore, injectable products such as botulinum toxin must be evaluated and registered by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) before they can be supplied, and should be administered by qualified medical practitioners.
Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces the signalling between the nerve and the treated muscle.
This decreases excessive muscle contraction and may soften the appearance of movement-related lines.
The aim is not necessarily to stop all facial movement.
When appropriate, I usually prefer to reduce excessive muscle activity while preserving natural facial expression.
Which Areas Can Be Treated?
Forehead Lines
Horizontal forehead lines usually develop from repeated contraction of the frontalis muscle when the eyebrows are raised.
Treatment requires careful assessment because the forehead muscle also helps support eyebrow position.
Frown Lines
Vertical lines between the eyebrows are commonly associated with activity of the glabellar muscles.
These lines may become more noticeable when frowning, concentrating or squinting.
Crow’s Feet
Crow’s feet develop around the outer corners of the eyes and are particularly noticeable during smiling or squinting.
Treatment can reduce excessive contraction in selected parts of the surrounding eye muscle while maintaining natural expression.
I Do Not Treat Every Forehead the Same Way
Two people can have similar-looking forehead lines but require very different treatment planning.
- Eyebrow position and shape
- Forehead height
- Existing eyelid or eyebrow heaviness
- Strength of the forehead muscles
- Frown-muscle activity
- Facial asymmetry
- How much movement the patient naturally has
- Whether the lines are dynamic or already static
Will Anti-Wrinkle Treatment Make My Face Look Frozen?
It does not have to.
The appearance after treatment depends on factors such as dose, injection placement, individual anatomy and muscle strength.
Some patients want stronger movement reduction. Others prefer to retain more expression.
My approach is generally to treat the muscles that are contributing to the concern while avoiding unnecessary treatment of surrounding areas.
A natural-looking result should still look like your face — simply with less excessive muscle contraction in selected areas.
When Anti-Wrinkle Treatment May Not Be the Main Answer
Anti-wrinkle treatment primarily addresses muscle-related movement. If the main concern is caused by something else, I may recommend a different or combined approach.
| Concern | Main contributing factor | Treatment category that may be considered |
|---|---|---|
| Expression lines | Repeated muscle activity | Botulinum toxin |
| Deep static wrinkles | Established skin creasing / collagen loss | Skin resurfacing, collagen stimulation or combination treatment |
| Facial hollowing | Volume loss | Dermal filler or collagen-restoration approaches |
| Skin laxity | Tissue laxity | HIFU, RF or other tightening approaches |
| Pigmentation / uneven tone | Pigment or photodamage | Laser or other skin-directed treatments |
| Dry, crepey skin | Skin-quality changes | Skin boosters or regenerative skin treatments |
My Approach to Anti-Wrinkle Treatment
I usually approach treatment in three stages.
Assess the Face at Rest
This shows me which lines are already present without movement.
Assess Facial Expression
I ask the patient to raise the eyebrows, frown, smile and squint so I can understand how the muscles are working.
Plan According to Anatomy & Goals
The aim may be to soften selected lines, reduce excessive muscle activity, maintain eyebrow position and preserve natural expression.
When Does Anti-Wrinkle Treatment Start Working?
The effect is not immediate.
Muscle activity generally begins to reduce gradually over the days following treatment, with the effect continuing to develop afterwards.
The timing and degree of response vary between individuals and can depend on factors such as the treatment area, muscle strength, dose and individual biological response.
How Long Do the Effects Last?
Botulinum toxin is temporary.
As nerve signalling gradually returns, muscle movement progressively comes back.
The duration varies from person to person and may also differ between treatment areas.
Factors such as muscle strength, metabolism, treatment dose and previous treatment history can influence how long the effect is noticeable.
Is There Downtime?
Anti-wrinkle injections generally involve relatively little recovery time.
Temporary effects around the injection sites can include mild redness, swelling, tenderness or bruising.
Small raised areas may also be visible immediately after injection and usually settle.
As with any medical procedure, potential risks and treatment-specific precautions should be discussed before proceeding.
Why Injection Placement Matters
Facial muscles do not work independently.
Relaxing one muscle can alter the balance between neighbouring muscles.
For example, the forehead muscles help raise the eyebrows, while other muscles pull them downward.
This is why anti-wrinkle treatment is not simply about injecting wherever a wrinkle is visible.
I consider muscle direction, strength, eyebrow position, facial proportions and surrounding anatomy when planning treatment.
Cost Factors for Anti-Wrinkle Treatment in Singapore
The cost of anti-wrinkle treatment can vary depending on the treatment area, muscle strength, amount of botulinum toxin required and treatment objectives.
A small area requiring limited muscle reduction may require a different treatment plan from a patient with stronger facial muscles or several areas being treated.
I prefer to determine the appropriate treatment pattern after assessing the individual’s facial movement rather than deciding treatment purely according to a fixed number of injection points.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can anti-wrinkle treatment remove deep wrinkles completely?
It depends on the type of wrinkle. Lines caused mainly by facial movement may respond well to reducing muscle activity. If a line is already deeply present when the face is relaxed, skin-quality or collagen-related treatment may also need to be considered.
Can I still smile and make facial expressions?
Yes. Treatment does not necessarily require eliminating all movement. The amount of movement retained depends on the treatment plan, dose, injection placement and individual anatomy.
Can forehead treatment make the eyebrows feel heavy?
It can occur if treatment changes the balance of the forehead muscles, particularly in people who already rely strongly on the forehead muscle to help elevate the eyebrows. This is one reason I assess eyebrow and eyelid position before treating the forehead.
How often is anti-wrinkle treatment needed?
There is no single schedule that applies to everyone. Botulinum toxin gradually wears off, and retreatment depends on how quickly movement returns, the treatment area and the individual’s preferences. In general, botulinum toxin lasts 3–4 months for the upper face and 4–6 months for the jaw masseter muscle.
Can forehead lines, frown lines and crow’s feet be treated together?
They are often treated during the same session, but I still assess each area separately because the muscles interact with one another. The appropriate areas and doses depend on the individual’s facial movement and anatomy.
Is anti-wrinkle treatment suitable for everyone?
No. Suitability depends on medical history, medications, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, neuromuscular conditions, the treatment area and other individual factors. Medical assessment is required before treatment.
